A BRIEF HISTORY
Cosumnes River College is pleased to announce the creation of its Global Studies Program. Starting in 2005, founding faculty members Martin Morales (international relations), Maureen Moore (humanities) and Rosalie Amer (humanities, history and library science) - all internationalists - began discussion on the need to create a program that would serve Cosumnes River College, its students and the community. Over the course of the next four years, they created the Global Studies Program.
The Global Studies Program offers certificates for courses of study in Latin America, the Pacific Rim and Europe. Other areas of study, specifically, the Middle East, Africa, Central Asia and Southeast Asia, require students to enroll in an appropriate foreign language course at either Sacramento City College or another accredited institution. Upon course completion in a region specific language, students will be eligible for a certificate.
This website has been created to give you an overview of the Global Studies Program and its various components. It includes a list of courses, scheduled offerings and descriptions of the Certificate Program; it lists majors and careers served by Global Studies majors as well as associated on campus programs and series. This website includes information about student publications and associations and faculty biographies, too.
COURSE OFFERINGS
CRC's Global Studies Program is part of an interdisciplinary program incorporating courses and faculty from social sciences, language, arts and the humanities.
Business is rapidly becoming international. Businesses are attempting to recruit people in both the manufacturing and service sectors who can travel, plan and communicate effectively in the global environment. Businesses also seek to hire employees who can interact productively and positively with the diverse subcultures represented in today's workplaces, particularly those in California.
The Global Studies Program offerings rotate on a biannual basis to ensure maximum variety for students. In an effort to increase student knowledge and awareness on upcoming regions, a parallel film and lecture series presents relevant, issue-oriented global topics. For example, in anticipation of the Spring 2011 semester, various films and lectures will be offered during Fall 2010, across campus that focus on the Pacific Rim.
Cosumnes River College has partnered with Sacramento City College, one of its sister campuses in the LRCCD, to offer language instruction in support of the Global Studies Program.
