Hawks split versus Sierra and Sac City, host 1st place SRJC tonight

Following three straight victories to open Big 8 play, the Hawks closed last week with a tough overtime loss to then top-ranked Diablo Valley College at home.  The loss snapped the Hawks seven game winning streak, and threw them into a tie for second place, as they headed to Rocklin to face Sierra College (11-8; 3-3) on Tuesday night.  The Wolverines controlled tempo from the opening tip, taking advantage of Cosumnes River's poor transition defense, and capitalizing on timely shooting from the perimeter.  Forward Tony Gill (Oakmont), CRC's Student-Athlete of the Month for December, played one of his best games of the season as he scored 25 points while grabbing 13 rebounds.  Gill's stellar play would not be enough to spur a comeback however, as Sierra defeated Cosumnes River 90-77 on Tuesday night, increasing the Hawks Big 8 losing streak to two games.  Sophomore wing James Tillman (Pioneer) added 18 points for the Hawks, while post Ryan Salmonson (Colfax) also scored in double figures, pouring in 11 points in the loss.

The schedule did not look to get any easier for the Hawks, who proceeded to host rival Sacramento City (13-5; 2-4) on Friday night, who defeated CRC earlier in the year in the Hawks Invitational championship game.  The game was tightly contested from the beginning to end, as the Hawks entered halftime with a narrow 35-34 advantage.  However, Cosumnes River's timely shooting and outstanding defense on the perimeter helped the Hawks secure the victory, as CRC defeated the Panthers 72-69.  Tony Gill led all scorers with 20 points on the night, shooting a perfect 10 of 10 from the charity stripe, while knocking down a pair of three-pointers.  Ryan Salmonson also helped pace the Hawks offense, scoring 14 points in the effort.

The victory over Sac City gives the Hawks a 4-2 Big 8 conference record, 14-7 overall, heading into play this week.  The Hawks open the week with a pivotal home game against first-place Santa Rosa JC (17-4; 6-0), currently ranked #7 in the State.  Tip-off for this contest is scheduled for 7:30.  Cosumnes River finishes out the week on the road against Delta College (3-14; 1-5), who have struggled mightily since opening conference play.

Hawks retain #16 ranking, 2nd place in Big 8

According to Cosumnes River men's basketball coach James Giacomazzi, "there are games you lose and games where you just get beat," the latter indicative of the Hawks experience against top-ranked Diablo Valley College (16-2; 3-1) on Friday night.  In the much anticipated match-up between two of the Big 8 conference's top teams, the Hawks and Vikings did not disappoint, putting on an impressive spectacle that required an overtime period to declare a winner.

The Hawks and Vikings took the first half to get a feel for each other's personnel and tempo of play, as DVC took a 27-22 lead into the half, following a first period characterized by stifling defense from both sides.  In the second half, DVC guard Brian Goins took control, scoring many of his game-high 40 points in the half to build a comfortable lead over the Hawks.  However, a late CRC run capped off by a Tony Gill (Oakmont) three-point basket at the buzzer, sent the game into overtime with both squads deadlocked at 72 after regulation.  Diablo Valley managed to take back momentum following three consecutive possessions where the Hawks failed to score to open the period, as CRC managed just four points in OT, falling to the Vikings 82-76.  Sophomores James Tillman (Pioneer) and Tony Gill (Oakmont) paced the offense, scoring 23 points each and knocking down two three-point field goals apiece.

Cosumnes River opened the week against crosstown rival American River (5-9; 0-4), who never managed to get going defensively against the Hawks on Tuesday.  CRC shot the Beavers out of their zone defense, hitting eight three-point baskets on the day.  The Hawks impressive display of shooting from the perimeter was led by sophomores JJ Mina (Bradshaw Christian) and Tony Baldocchi (Cardinal Newman), who each notched three trey's on the night.  Mina finished the contest with a team-high 19 points, and Baldocchi wasn't far behind with 17 points, as Cosumnes River preyed on the Beavers 99-75.

#16 CRC enters the week with a record of 13-6 overall, 3-1 in conference, by heading to Rocklin to take on the Wolverines of Sierra College (9-8; 1-3).  The Hawks close out the week with a rematch against visiting Sacramento City (13-3; 2-2), looking to avenge a loss to the Panthers in the Hawks Invitational occurring back in November.  Tip-off for that match-up is scheduled for 7:30.

Hawks take 3rd at Clark Classic, head to MJC Invitational today

Coming off a disappointing showing at the Ed Boyle Classic at Mendocino College, the Cosumnes River

men's basketball entered the weekend with a .500 record, a disappointment given the lofty

expectations the team had entering the season. However, the Hawks have performed well,

historically, in the James Clark Classic. The Clark Classic began Thursday afternoon, running through

the championship game which was held on Saturday. The Hawks opened the tournament with an 82-

58 rout over Napa Valley, in a game that saw CRC shoot over 50% from the field. Sophomore post

Tony Gill (Oakmont) led the way with 19 points and 17 rebounds, and frontcourt mate Ryan

Salmonson (Colfax) added 18 points to put away the Storm handedly.

Game two saw the Hawks tip-off against Feather River, who narrowly came away with a victory over

Columbia College in their first contest. Feather River shot the ball extremely well from the perimeter,

hitting 13 three-pointers en route to a 105-95 victory over the Hawks. Cosumnes River moved on to

face the 20th ranked Chabot Gladiators of Hayward in the third-place game on Saturday afternoon.

The Hawks dominated the Gladiators throughout the contest, as Chabot had difficulty defending CRC's

size inside the paint. Ryan Salmonson scored 39 points while grabbing 16 rebounds for the Hawks, on

his way to earning All-Tournament honors. Tony Gill notched another double-double, as he poured in

12 points while collecting 15 rebounds on the day.

Cosumnes River (5-4) heads to Modesto to compete in the 16-team Modesto JC Invitational today.

The Hawks face the Blue Devils of Merced (1-6) in the opener, which will tip off at 4:00 PM today. CRC

will then be idle on Wednesday, before competing in the second game of the Invitational on Thursday,

at a time to be determined.

Hawks host James Clark Classic this Thursday-Saturday

After a disappointing showing in Ukiah in the Ed Boyle Classic earlier this month, Cosumnes River looks to rebound at home, as they host the James Clark Classic December 1st through the 3rd.  The Hawks (3-3) take on the Storm of Napa Valley College in the opening round, which will take place Thursday.  Tip-off for that game is scheduled for 3 PM. Other teams participating in the tournament this weekend will be Feather River of Quincy, Columbia College or Sonora, Chabot of Hayward, Porterville, Merced, and Big 8 rival Modesto Junior College.  The full tournament bracket can be found at the following link: http://t.co/RwHBtiJW

Hawks fall in Ed Boyle consolation game

An old sports cliché is that the game "is a game of inches;" for the 2011-2012 Cosumnes River College men's basketball team, the game is a mere matter of a couple possessions.  Ranked #18 in the state to begin the year, the Hawks concluded their opening tournament at home by dropping a close contest to local rival Sacramento City, a contest the Hawks seemed to give away in the concluding minutes.  Looking to rebound from that difficult loss, the Hawks travelled north to Ukiah to take part in the Ed Boyle Classic at Mendocino College.  The tournament took place last Thursday through Saturday, and featured many teams who CRC defeated on their way to the 2010 tournament championship.  They opened up at #8 Las Positas, a talented-squad who the Hawks defeated in the 2010 Ed Boyle Championship game.

Cosumnes River jumped to an early double-digit lead over the Hawks of Las Positas, as the interior combination of Tony Gill (Oakmont) and Ryan Salmonson (Colfax) took advantage of an undersized Las Positas front court.  Sophomore James Tillman (Pioneer) was a force defensively, negating the Hawks primary scoring threat for the majority of the first half, as CRC took a 35-31 lead into halftime.  Cosumnes River lost one of their starters in sophomore Fred Mobley (Oakmont) late in the first half to an ankle injury, and having already lost forward JJ Mina (Bradshaw Christian) for the entire tournament, the short-handed Hawks entered the second half on their heels without two of their starters.  Cosumnes River pushed the lead to double-digits to begin the half, but turnovers and 60% field goal shooting from Las Positas closed the gap, as both teams were tied at the end of regulation, forcing overtime.  Consecutive drives of made Las Positas baskets, followed by CRC turnovers, solidified the 79-73 overtime victory for Las Positas who advanced to the winner's bracket.

The loss set up a rematch of last year's second round match-up, as Cosumnes River took on Siskiyous in an elimination game on Friday.  Siskiyous jumped out to an early lead over the Hawks, but Cosumnes River made a run late in the second half to tie things up entering halftime.  The Hawks began to pull away, holding a double-digit lead for the majority of the second half, and put an exclamation point on the 69-59 victory with a Tony Gill dunk at the buzzer.  Cosumnes River advanced to play #11 Cuesta in the consolation game, in a match-up of arguably the two most-talented teams in the tournament.  But team's played solid, up-tempo basketball, as each team traded baskets early in the first half while Cosumnes River played to a 45-44 advantage at the half.  However, Cuesta took advantage of missed shots and turnovers, as they paced the Hawks for most of the second-half.  CRC made a late run, but Hawks offensive fouls and timely shooting from Cuesta slammed the door on the rally, as Cuesta defeated Cosumnes River 85-80 in the consolation game.

Cosumnes River heads into the break with a 3-3 record, and returns to action at the beginning of December in the James Clark Classic at Cosumnes River College.
