To the average soccer fan, the Hawks October record heading into the week of 3-3 might appear ordinary.  However, upon closer inspection, one cannot help but be impressed by the level of competition CRC has faced over the past month.  Of the six teams the Hawks have faced, four are ranked in the State's top-20 power rankings, with two of the teams ranked in the top 10.  The brutal schedule continued for Coach Ron Preble and his club, as they played host to another top 10 club in #10 Lassen (11-1-3; 6-0-0).

Overcoming injuries to key players, Coach Ron Preble and his staff have done a masterful job of getting the most out of their players, as evident in the team's narrow 2-1 loss to a very talented Lassen team.  Cosumnes River competed valiantly in the contest, battling the Cougars to a 0-0 tie heading into half-time.  The defensive battle continued deep into the second half, before freshman forward Darrien Parker penetrated the Lassen defense for a goal to take the lead, 1-0.  Lassen rebounded like a top-10 club, applying pressure to the Hawks backfield en route to a pair of goals to take the lead, 2-1.  The lead would hold, as the Hawks were unable to take advantage of a few offensive opportunities late in the match.  However, CRC continues to look impressive in stretches, and will look to rebound from this loss as they continue Big 8 play tonight against visiting Santa Rosa (5-5-2; 2-2-1).

Today's match is scheduled for 3 PM, and projects to be a battle as Santa Rosa looks to avenge their loss to CRC earlier in the season.  The Hawks close the week against a very talented #11 American River team (9-4-3; 2-2-1), in a match-up of two of the Big 8's finest, this Friday at home.  That match is also scheduled for 3 PM.

Men's soccer loses crucial home game

10/25/11

The CRC men's soccer team continued their brutal non-conference schedule, as they faced two of the top teams in the Central Valley Conference last week.  The Hawks opened the week at home, where they played host to the CVC's top club, the Rams of Fresno City (6-5-6; 1-0-1).

Cosumnes River played well, but had difficulty establishing a rhythm on offense, as they struggled against a talented Fresno City squad.  The Rams scored two goals against the Hawks, which would be enough to solidify the victory, as they shut out CRC, 2-0.  The schedule did not get any easier for the Hawks, as they closed out the week by travelling to Lemoore to face third-place West Hills (6-4-4; 1-1-0).  This match-up was decided by defense, as both teams shut down each other offensively.  Coach Ron Preble's Hawks eventually pierced through the West Hills defense, however, as they managed to record a lone goal in the contest en route to the 1-0 victory.

Cosumnes River (8-6-1; 2-1-1) enters the week in a tie for second place in the Big 8 Conference.  In their only match of the week, the Hawks play host to Lassen (9-1-3; 5-0-0), who stand atop the Golden Valley Conference with an unblemished conference mark.  The match is scheduled for Wednesday, and is set to kick off at 4.

Hawks split against CVC foes, face two more this week

The Hawks entered action this past week with a strong 2-1-1 record against Big 8 competition, including a 1-0-1 mark on the road.  This week began a two-week stretch where the Hawks take on some of Northern California's top teams, in four contests against teams from the Central Valley Conference.

CRC travelled to Visalia to take on the College of the Sequoias, who were looking to rebound off a tough stretch to open the season.  Cosumnes River did not yield much to the Giants (0-9-0; 0-2-0), striking early and often in the 3-1 route.  Freshman forward Marek Albert of West Campus scored two goals, and sophomore Aaron McCollum of Will C. Wood (pictured above) scored another, in the blow out.

The Hawks then headed home to take on current Central Valley Conference leader Taft College (7-4-3; 1-0-1), in a match-up of two talented offensive squads.  The Cougars stepped off the bus looking for blood, as the Taft offense looked to stay aggressive against the Hawks defense.  Taft notched their first goal of the game off a penalty kick, and then added a second one later in the first half.  The Hawks answered with a goal of their own, as sophomore Marek Albert continued his impressive week with another score.  However, another penalty kick in the first half produced a 3-1 lead for the Cougars, one they would hold en route to the 4-1 victory on Friday.

Cosumnes River (7-5-1; 2-1-1) remains in a tie for second in the Big 8 Conference, as they continue a second week against Central Valley Conference competition.  They play host to the Fresno City College Rams (5-5-5; 1-0-1) today at 4 pm on the soccer fields, before travelling to Lemoore on Friday to face West Hills College (6-3-3; 1-1-0).

Hawks split against MJC and Delta, host Taft on Friday

The Hawks are coming off an impressive week, which saw them open Big 8 play against two of the better teams in conference on the road.  CRC went undefeated on the week, upsetting Santa Rosa and playing American River to a 0-0 tie.  Cosumnes River opened up a two-game homestand against undefeated Modesto (8-0-3; 3-0-1), who is cementing its presence as one of the top teams in Northern California this season.

Modesto looked every bit the part of Big 8 conference leader, as they challenged the Hawks from the very beginning of the match.  Modesto's offensive firepower, paired with their stingy defense, proved to be too much for the Hawks, as they defeated CRC 2-0.  The Hawks looked to rebound from their first conference defeat of the season, as they hosted visiting Delta on Friday.

The Hawks got on the board early and often against Delta (4-6-2; 0-4-0), as they opened up a big lead they never conceded in the 6-3 victory.  Marek Albert scored a pair of goals in the victory, and was joined by solo shots from Zachary Azevedo, Allan Espinoza, Darrien Parker and Eliezer Ramos (pictured above) in the effort.  The win gives the men's soccer team a record of 6-4-1 overall, and a 2-1-1 conference record entering this week.  CRC is currently in a tie for second place in the Big 8 conference.

The Hawks travel to Visalia to face Sequoias (0-6-0; 0-2-0) tomorrow, and return home to host visiting Taft (5-4-3; 1-0-1) on Friday.  Taft is currently in a tie for first place in the Central Valley Conference, and should prove to be a tough opponent for the Hawks.

Hawks impressive in Big 8 debut, host MJC and Delta this week

The 2011 campaign for Coach Ron Preble’s Hawks has been anything but predictable.  After falling to College of the Canyons on the road in the opener, the Hawks returned home with an impressive offensive showing against rivals Yuba and Butte, scoring eight goals in two games.  The offense sputtered after that, scoring a lone goal over a three-game road trip.  The Hawks struggled over a difficult non-conference schedule to open the season, and appeared headed for further difficulty as they opened Big 8 play on the road.

On Tuesday, CRC headed north to take on 2010 Big 8 Conference champion Santa Rosa (2-2-1; 1-1-1).  The Hawks weren’t intimidated, powered on offense by freshman Marek Albert and Eliezer Ramos (pictured above), who both netted goals for the Hawks in the 2-1 victory.  In yet another impressive display, CRC hit the road Friday to take on 2010 Big 8 runner-up American River (6-2-1; 0-1-1), in what would prove to be a stellar defensive performance by both clubs.  The Hawks performed admirably against the Beavers, controlling tempo and putting together an impressive defensive display at ARC.  Cosumnes River and ARC finished the match at a 0-0 tie, as the Hawks finished their first week of conference play undefeated.

The road doesn’t get any easier for the Hawks (5-3-1; 1-0-1), who begin a two-game homestand this week, hosting undefeated Modesto (6-0-3; 2-0-1) and rival Delta (4-4-2; 0-2-0).  These matches will be played on Tuesday and Friday respectively, both at 4pm.  Come out and support your Cosumnes River Hawks, as they enter the week in second place in the Big 8 conference!

Hawks make easy work of the Comets, open Big 8 play tomorrow

The Cosumnes River College men’s soccer team continued their domination at home, extending their current home winning streak past three games, as they closed out the non-conference season against visiting Contra Costa on Tuesday.  The Hawks were in control the entire game, seemingly keeping the pressure on CCC’s defense for 90 minutes.  Goals by sophomore Julian Vallejo and freshman Forward Marek Albert powered the Hawks offense, while an impressive performance by the Hawks midfield and defenders solidified the 2-0 shut out over the Comets.

The Hawks enter Big 8 conference competition with a 4-3 record, an impressive mark given the difficulty of their non-conference schedule.  This week sees the Hawks traveling to Santa Rosa on Tuesday, before hosting Modesto JC a week later in the conference home opener.  That match will begin promptly at 4 PM.

We wish Head Coach Ron Preble and his squad the best of luck and a safe trip home tomorrow as they face Santa Rosa.  Go Hawks!

Hawks offense struggles against two of Nor-Cal’s best, host Comets tomorrow

The Cosumnes River College men’s soccer team concluded a difficult week on the road, where they faced elite competition in Canada, San Francisco and Hartnell.  The Hawks played well last Friday, jumping on the Colts for a goal early in the second half.  However, as would prove true on this roadtrip, offense would be difficult to come by.  The Hawks failed to score another goal the rest of the trip, falling in shutouts to San Francisco and Hartnell in difficult tests for this young club.

Coach Ron Preble and his Hawks look to rebound this week, where they host the Comets of Contra Costa College tomorrow at 4.  With a victory, the Hawks will improve above .500, and will move ahead to Big 8 conference competition with a winning record.  CRC opens up the conference schedule next Tuesday in Santa Rosa.

Hawks begin roadtrip, shutout Canada

The Cosumnes River men’s soccer team continued its hot start to the 2011 season, as they began a three-game stint on the road, which will have taken them across the San Francisco Peninsula and into the South Bay.  The Hawks opened up the road trip against Canada College of Redwood City on Friday, beginning a test which should prepare the club for the difficult conference schedule ahead.

Coach Ron Preble’s club was well-prepared for the unseasonably hot, muggy conditions they faced on the road.  The match was competitive throughout, as both teams’ played conservatively as they became accustomed to each other’s system of play, and played each other to a 0-0 tie at halftime.  The second half proved to be more physical than the first, as yellow cards were issued to both teams.  Fortunately, it was the Hawks who drew first blood, scoring a goal about 20 minutes into the second half.  “Julian Vallejo ran on to a ball that Omar Callejas clipped in front of him, and took the volley brilliantly, smashing it into the net,” says Head Coach Ron Preble.  The goal was all CRC needed, as the defense performed admirably in shutting out Canada, giving the Hawks their first road victory of the season.  Coach Preble offered praise to his defense for their staunch effort.  “Goalkeeper Leo Luna, with the backline defensive unit, worked very hard to seal the clean sheet.”

The victory over Canada followed a home victory by the Hawks, over visiting Butte College on Tuesday.  The Hawks offense struck early and often, en route to the 3-2 victory.  CRC continues the road trip this week, as they face City College of San Francisco on Tuesday, before travelling to Salinas to face Hartnell.

The Hawks next home match takes place next Tuesday, September 20th at 4 pm.  They’ll host the visiting Comets of Contra Costa College.  That match-up will be the Hawks last non-conference contest, as they open Big 8 play the following week.

We wish the Hawks men, as well as the coaching staff, the best of luck on the road this week.

Hawks thump 49ers, host Butte today

The men’s soccer team kicked off the 2011 season in grand fashion, with a big win against Bay Valley Conference opponent Yuba City in the home opener.  The Hawks dominated the 2010 BVC Champions, outlasting the 49ers 5-2 on Friday.  The win gave the Hawks a split in opening action, after they travelled to Canyon Country to face College of the Canyons.  CRC lost in Santa Clarita to Canyons 2-0, in a challenging pre-conference schedule test.  The Hawks host Butte tonight at 4, and finish the week by traveling to Redwood City to face Canada on Friday.
