Hawks fall to FCC in stoppage time
The 2011 season came to an end last Tuesday for the CRC women's soccer team, as they lost on the road to #3 seeded Fresno City College 2-1. The match was tight from beginning to end, as the evenly-matched teams played most of the game deadlocked. Both clubs played to a 0-0 tie at halftime, before freshman forward Katie Ulan (St. Francis) put the Hawks on the board with a goal early in the second half, giving CRC a 1-0 lead. Fresno City countered quickly with a goal of their own, and both teams played the remainder of the second half tied at one. In stoppage time, the Rams managed to find the net before the final whistle, ending the Hawks bid for a state title.
Cosumnes River finishes the year with a 13-8-2 final record, and a 7-5-2 conference mark, good for 3rd place in the Big 8. We thank Coach Cesar Plasencia and his team for a terrific season of exciting soccer action, as we look ahead to the 2012 campaign.

Hawks knock off #11 Solano, take on #3 Fresno City today
Coming off a strong October, where the Hawks went 5-1-1, the Cosumnes River women's soccer team looked poised to seize a top-seed while competing for the Big 8 conference title. However, the Hawks offense uncharacteristically sputtered in November, as they dropped three of their last four matches, while tying the other. Given their struggles down the stretch, Cosumnes River looked to be in danger of possibly losing a chance to host in the first round of the Northern California regionals. In the end, the Hawks were rewarded for their strong performance throughout the season and their difficult non-conference schedule, as they managed to secure the #6 seed and a chance to host #11 seed Solano in the first round of the playoffs.
The Bay Valley Conference champion Solano Falcons (10-7-4) looked to capitalize on the Hawks recent lackluster performance offensively, in their bid to advance to the second round. Both teams struggled to get going offensively in the first half, as they played to a 0-0 tie at halftime. CRC managed to find the offense that had evaded them for most of the month during the second half however, as freshman forward Jordan Moore (Nevada Union) found the net on a header off a Michelle Russell (Lodi) cross, with 38 minutes to play in the second half. The Hawks extended their lead on a goal from freshman forward Katie Ulan (St. Francis) with 26 minutes remaining, giving CRC a 2-0 advantage over Solano. The Falcons remained aggressive throughout the second half, managing to score once in the remaining minutes; but the Hawks two goal advantage was too much to overcome, as #6 Cosumnes River defeated #11 Solano 2-1 to advance to the second round.
Cosumnes River (13-7-2) advances to play the #3-seeded Rams of Fresno City College (16-6-0), the 2011 Central Valley Conference champions. The Rams defeated #14 Ohlone 3-1 in their first round match-up to solidify their spot in the second round. This match will take place later today at Fresno City College, with the winner advancing to play the winner of #10 Foothill and #2 CCSF. We wish Coach Cesar Plasencia and the Hawks women's soccer team the best of luck today in their postseason match.

Hawks knock off #2 DVC on the road, hold off Delta
Prior to the beginning of the season, Coach Cesar Plasencia and his team established lofty expectations for their 2011 campaign: anything less than a State championship would be disappointing to the host of the 2011 CCCAA State Championships. Following a barrage of injuries, the Hawks have persevered, and appear poised for a deep run in the postseason. Victories like those this past week over Big 8 foes DVC and Delta have solidified the Hawks place as one of the top teams in the state.
In what could prove to be one of the biggest victories of the season for the Hawks, CRC defeated the State's #2 team and Big 8 conference leader, Diablo Valley College (12-2-2; 7-1-2) on Tuesday night. Coach Plasencia's squad travelled to Pleasant Hill, looking to avenge the closely-contested 2-1 loss they sustained at the hands of the Vikings earlier in the year at home.
Powered by freshman forwards Katie Ulan and Jordan Moore, the Hawks offense scored early and often against an overmatched Vikings team, who were looking to increase their conference lead over the second-place Hawks. Ulan and Moore both scored two goals on the day, and sophomore leader Melissa Gomez contributed another, as Cosumnes River coasted to a 5-2 victory over DVC. Goalkeeper Claudia Lara helped secure the victory with eight saves in the contest.
The Hawks then played host to visiting Delta College (9-7-1; 3-6-1) on Friday, as they tried to earn their fifth win during the month of October. CRC Student-Athlete of the Month for September, freshman forward Katie Ulan, continued her stellar freshman campaign as she scored the lone goal for CRC in the contest. Cosumnes River's stellar defense and goalkeeping ensured this goal would be enough, as the Hawks defeated the Mustangs 1-0.
The Hawks begin the week in second place in the extremely competitive Big 8 conference. #5 ranked Cosumnes River (12-4-1; 7-2-1) travels to face Sierra (7-7-2; 3-5-2) today in Rocklin, and returns home Friday to host #21 American River (7-6-2; 3-5-2).10/31/11

Hawks Defeat #2 Diablo Valley on the Road
10/25/11
Under head coach Cesar Plasencia, Cosumnes River College's women's soccer team has enjoyed their fair share of success. Wins have hardly been a scarce commodity for the Hawks; however, some victories are always sweeter than others, such as those coming against rival Sacramento City. In their lone contest of the week, CRC hosted the visiting Panthers, in what has become a lopsided affair in recent years.
The Hawks offensive firepower was on display as freshman forwards Jordan Moore, and CRC Student-Athlete of the Month Katie Ulan, each recorded a pair of goals against an overmatched Sac City defense. A pair of assists by sophomore Danielle Lovato, and solo assists from Michelle Russell and standout goalkeeper Claudia Lara, paved the way for the offense in the 4-1 win. With the victory, Cosumnes River moves into second place in the Big 8 Conference, with a 5-2-1 conference record (10-4-1 overall).
The Hawks travel to Pleasant Hill today, where they will face host Diablo Valley in a battle of the two top teams in the conference. The first-place Vikings (11-1-2; 6-0-2) take the field in the hopes of increasing their conference lead against the Hawks, who are right on their heels for conference supremacy. CRC will then play host to rival Delta College (8-6-1; 2-5-1) on Friday. The opening kick is scheduled for 3:30.
10/18/11
Cosumnes River women's soccer team entered the week fresh off a stretch which saw the Hawks win or tie seven of their last eight contests. CRC would immediately be tested, as they hosted Santa Rosa (9-1-2; 4-1-2), one of the top programs in the state. In a battle of Big 8 powerhouses, SRJC's offense got off to a fast start, and did not look back in the relatively one-sided affair. The Hawks were short-handed, but struggled to get going offensively, falling to Santa Rosa 4-0 at home.
Looking to rebound off their disappointing showing earlier in the week, CRC travelled to host Modesto (11-3-1; 4-3-1), in an early afternoon contest Friday. The most challenging aspect of the contest proved to be the trip to Modesto, as the Hawks were in control from the opening kick, defeating MJC 2-1. Freshman forward Jordan Moore (pictured above), continued her impressive 2011 season, scoring a pair of goals to power the Hawks offense.
Cosumnes River (9-4-1; 4-2-1) enters the week in a tie for third place in the Big 8 Conference, and faces local rival Sacramento City (0-12-1; 0-8-0) on the road Friday.
We'd also like to take a moment to recognize freshman Katie Ulan, Cosumnes River College's Student-Athlete of the Month for September. Katie's stellar month offensively, highlighted by consecutive matches where she scored three goals, led the Hawks to a 6-3 mark in September. As CRC's Student-Athlete of the Month, Ulan was officially nominated for recognition by the CCCAA. We'd like to congratulate Katie for her outstanding performance in the month of September, and wish her the best moving forward in the 2011 season.

Ulan, Mickey lead talented CRC offense, Santa Rosa and MJC this week
The Cosumnes River women's soccer team continued its explosive offensive season this week, against talented Big 8 foes Sierra and American River. Looking to rebound from splitting against DVC and Delta, the Hawks unleashed an impressive offensive attack that saw them score seven goals this week, en route to an undefeated third week of conference play. The Hawks began the week by hosting the Wolverines of Sierra College (5-4-2; 1-2-2).
Star freshman Katie Ulan continued her outstanding 2011 campaign with a pair of goals to power the Hawks offense over the visiting Wolverines. Sophomores Kristen Mickey and Ashley Torres each added goals, as did freshman Jordan Moore, in the 5-0 route. The Hawks travelled to face the Beavers of American River College (6-3-1; 2-2-1), in a match-up of two of the top teams in the conference on Friday. Kristen Mickey continued her impressive week by notching her second goal, and was joined by sophomore Melissa Gomez (pictured above), as the Hawks battled to score twice against a talented Beavers squad. ARC put together an impressive offensive performance in their own right, scoring two goals against the Hawks to seal the 2-2 tie.
CRC begins the week in second place, with a conference record of 3-1-1, and an overall mark of 8-3-1. The Hawks host visiting Santa Rosa (7-1-2; 2-1-2) tomorrow at 3:30 on the soccer fields. They then travel to Modesto on Friday to face Modesto JC (9-2-1; 2-2-1).

Hawks fall to DVC, rebound against Delta
The Hawks women's soccer team entered play Tuesday with a four-game winning streak, sporting a goal differential of 18-2 over that stretch. They hosted visiting Diablo Valley College in a battle of Big 8 juggernauts. DVC came out with an aggressive game plan on offense, meticulously applying constant pressure on CRC's defense. The Vikings struck first on an Anghela Gonzales deflection, off a cross by Ana Torres to take a 1-0 lead. CRC came right back, attacking through the air to find freshman Jordan Moore, knotting things up at 1. From this point, the match became an exhibition of missed opportunities. DVC missed on a few scoring opportunities wide right, while an apparent goal by CRC freshman Katie Ulan was called back for offsides. Freshman forward Violetta Alaiyan eventually would notch the game winner, as the Vikings take a close one over the Hawks, 2-1.
There would be no let down for Coach Cesar Plasencia and his club, as the Hawks rebounded well against Big 8 rival Delta on Friday. Ulan continued her impressive 2011 season with another multi-goal match, scoring two goals against an outmatched Delta defense. Jordan Moore also scored in the effort, as CRC defeated Delta 3-1, to finish the week 7-3-0 overall and 2-1-0 in Big 8 play.
Cosumnes River enters the week in third place in the Big 8 conference, as they prepare to host visiting Sierra College (4-3-2; 0-1-2) on Tuesday. Kick-off on Tuesday is scheduled for 3:30. The Hawks will conclude the week at American River (5-3-0; 1-2-0).

Hawks freshman scores six goals in two games
When All-American and former Big 8 Conference MVP Dani Arellano succumbed to injury in the opening game of the season, question marks remained about who would help fill the void offensively for the Hawks. Those questions were quickly answered over the month of September, given the stellar play of a few newcomers to the Hawks program. Freshman Jordan Moore kicked things off with a string of impressive scoring performances in Arellano's absence. Contributions from freshman Alley Drake and sophomore Kristen Mickey have also added to the Hawks offensive firepower this season. In the past week however, nobody has been more dominant than freshman Katie Ulan, whose six goals over the last two games have helped the Hawks to a 6-2 record as they head deep into Big 8 conference play.
Tuesday, the Hawks closed out non-conference play, as they hosted visiting local powerhouse Solano. CRC dominated from the opening kick, scoring five goals against the Falcons, including three from freshman standout Ulan. Sophomores Melissa Gomez and Ashley Torres also contributed goals to the parade of offense, helping to secure the route of Solano, 5-1.
Cosumnes River continued their barrage of offense on Friday, as they opened up Big 8 conference play against visiting Sacramento City College. Cosumnes River was in control the whole game, opening up with a 2-0 lead in the first half, once again on the strength of a pair of goals by freshman Katie Ulan. In the second half, CRC applied more pressure on the Sac City defense, substituting in star freshman Jordan Moore. CRC's pressure created many scoring opportunities, which the Hawks were unable to capitalize on. Ulan narrowly missed what would have been a third goal, while a corner kick by sophomore Melissa Gomez was sent over the crossbar on a header by Kristen Mickey. Ulan did record a third goal late in the second half off an assist by Gomez, and goalkeeper Claudia Lara continued her brilliant freshman campaign, which cemented the 3-0 victory for CRC.
The Hawks host visiting Diablo Valley in a conference show down tomorrow at 3:30 PM, and finish the week in Stockton against rival Delta College.

Hawks star striker continues stellar sophomore campaign
The Hawks 2011 season has just begun, but it's already becoming a rollercoaster year for Cesar Plasencia and his team. The team opened up the year at home with a dominant win over visiting Butte. In the process however, they lost All-American Dani Arrellano for the season, a huge blow for a team relying heavily on her goal-scoring ability. The Hawks would show resolve the following week, with a road win over Yuba, before falling to Fresno and Cerritos to conclude the road trip. This latest setback would only prove temporary, as the Hawks rebounded with dominant wins over Evergreen and Los Medanos this week, climbing back to a record of 4-2 on the year.
The Hawks opened the week in the South Bay, visiting Evergreen College to conclude a four-game road trip. The Hawks proved to be too talented from the beginning, as Jordan Moore continued her offensive onslaught against CRC opponents, scoring two goals in the match. Alley Drake added a goal, as Cosumnes River defeated Evergreen 3-1.
CRC concluded the week with a home contest against visiting Los Medanos, kicking off a four-game homestand to begin conference play. The Hawks came out of the gate against Los Medanos looking for blood, and dominated the Panthers from beginning to end, in a 7-0 route. Star sophomore striker Kristen Mickey has continued to dominate, scoring three goals in the game to add to her tally for the year. A pair of goals from Alley Drake, along with solo efforts from Ashley Torres and Melissa Gomez, led the Hawks to victory in a contest that was never really competitive.
Cosumnes River closes out the non-conference season with a match against visiting Solano tomorrow at 3:30. The Hawks then begin Big 8 competition against rival Sacramento City on Friday.

Hawks return from difficult road trip, homestand begins Friday
A point of pride for many championship-caliber teams is scheduling the best opponents, often sacrificing early season victories for meaningful experience. These coaches do so in the hopes of capitalizing on this experience later in the season, en route to a successful postseason run. Cosumnes River's early non-conference scheduled included a brutal road trip, featuring back-to-back games against two of the nation's best programs.
On Thursday, the Hawks travelled down to face Fresno City College on the road, a program boasting a 3-1 playoff record and #8 national ranking last season. The Hawks were evenly matched with the Rams of Fresno City, in what would prove to be a defensive match-up for both programs. Forward GiGi Hilton and sophomore Paige Mason would connect on a goal for the Rams, and goaltender Tiffany Longcor recorded five saves in the shutout, as CRC fell in Fresno 1-0.
The road didn't get any easier for the Hawks, who travelled down to face Southern California powerhouse Cerritos College, in the latter-half of a "home and home." Cerritos finished the 2010 season with a spectacular 21-2-2 overall record, en route to a State semifinal appearance and a #6 national ranking. One of those losses came at the hands of Cesar Plasencia and his Hawks, who defeated Cerritos in a home game last season, 2-0. The Falcons of Cerritos faced an uphill battle early on, as CRC jumped to a 1-0 advantage in the first half, and maintained the lead entering half time. Cerritos made adjustments at halftime however, and scored two goals in the second half, on the strength of 14 shots on goal. Cosumnes River, who managed 5 shots on goal during the contest, was unable to inflict further damage in the match. The Hawks were shut out for the last 45 minutes of play, and lost a close one to Cerritos, 2-1.
Women's soccer looks to rebound on the road against Evergreen College on Tuesday, before returning to friendly soil for a four-game homestand. The Hawks kick things off Friday against Los Medanos at 3:30pm. We wish Coach Plasencia and his team the best as they look to finish the non-conference schedule on a positive note.

Hawks shine in opener, begin road trip against Yuba
The 2010 season for the Cosumnes River women's soccer team was a memorable one for all the right reasons. While battling injuries for much of the year, the Hawks exceeded all expectations, advancing to the third round of the playoffs. En route to their third round exit the Hawks upset Solano, the #1 seed in the North, in what Head Coach Cesar Plasencia calls "a huge win for us." The 2010 club set the tone early for what would be a successful campaign, with a pre-conference win over Cerritos in a match under the lights. As host to the 2011 CCCAA State Championships, the 2011 Hawks begin their season with State title aspirations. "It's not too cool to be hosting if you're not in it," said Plasencia. "We're excited about (hosting the championships); we expect to be in it."
While the Hawks opened the season with a 2-0 shut out over visiting Butte, the preparation for the 2011 season began long ago. During the off-season, Coach Plasencia's squad worked to "hammer in the curriculum," developing familiarity with their system. The team worked diligently to improve their base fitness, while spending time in the weight room conducting strength workouts. The 2011 team has big shoes to fill given a number of key roster losses. Sophomore Amie Gillette (Lodi) is out with an ACL injury, a player who coach Plasencia identified as "our playmaker" and "an offensive weapon who makes others around her better." Also gone from this year's team are defender Emily Freschette (Elk Grove) and Christina Gomez (West Campus), who the team lost to transfer. Most of the team is back however, including All-Conference and All-Academic performer Melissa Gomez (West Campus) and striker Kristen Mickey (Elk Grove), who opened up the season with a goal against Butte. Also back for the 2011 season is All-American Dani Arrellano, although Arellano succumbed to injury in the opening match.
Freshman Jordan Moore, Arellano's replacement, scored the second goal for Hawks, sealing the victory. Solid defense and the stellar play of freshman goaltender Claudia Lara held the lead against an aggressive Butte push to finish the game. The Cosumnes River College Hawks continue their pursuit of a State title tonight against Yuba, as they embark on four straight road contests against non-conference opponents. The Hawks next home game is September 16th at 3:30 against Los Medanos.
