Hawks Fall in Overtime
The Cosumnes River College men's basketball team opened up preseason play at home as they hosted the CRC Hawks Invitational Tournament. The gym was booming as they took the court against the College of the Siskiyous in the first round. The Hawks put on quite a show as they took care of business with a final score of 73-59. Cory Zackery (Lithonia H.S.) and Anthony Johnson (Carter H.S.) led the way with 13 points apiece and Josh McCarver (Green Valley H.S.) added on another 10 as those were the high scorers for the night. In the Semi-Final Round the team took on Canãda College. CRC prevailed again in a defensive struggle, coming away with a 56-43 win. Johnson was the teams high scorer in that game with 13 points. With two wins under their belt, they headed into the Championship Game to take on Los Medanos College. These two teams have a history, last year the Hawks took them on in the Semi-Final Game of this tournament and beat them to advance to the Championship game. This year revenge was on the minds of the Mustangs. The fan's couldn't have asked for a more exciting game as the teams were deadlocked at the end of the second half, sending the game into overtime. With fans on the edge of their seats and time winding down in overtime the Mustangs heaved up a shot that fell in as the buzzer rang. Los Medanos College slipped by with a 72-70 victory. CRC's McCarver led the team with 19 points, Gabe Strong added 15, Johnson had 13 and Corey Zackery rounded out the double digit scorers up with 10. The team had a great first weekend as they placed 2nd in the Invitational. The Hawks will be back in action this Saturday as they head to Columbia College for a 5:00 PM tip-off.
