CHEM 400 Prerequisites

Prerequisites for CHEM 400 at Cosumnes River College

There are two prerequisites for CHEM 400.  They are CHEM 300 (or one year of high school chemistry), and MATH 120 (Intermediate Algebra), each with a C or better.  Besides looking for these courses on your transcript, we also accept certain placement tests, and some -- not all -- higher math courses.  Use the tables below to determine how you can supply the required proof of meeting the prerequisites.

Prerequisite requirements have been implemented to ensure that you are adequately prepared for a class.  College policy requires that faculty enforce all prerequisites, and that policy is strictly enforced.  Failure to submit proof of meeting these prerequisites by the 2nd class meeting will result in your being dropped from the class.

PREREQUISITE ONE: MATH

Be sure to read both “If you…” and “And you…” columns, to get instruction for your specific situation.

IF YOU…

AND YOU…

THEN YOU MUST…

Took Math at CRC, ARC, SCC, or FLC/EDC

Took MATH 120 with a grade of C or above

The instructor probably has your information already in the system, but you may wish to bring a transcript -- unofficial is fine -- just in case.

Took MATH 335, 343, 350, 351, 370, 400, 401, 402, 410, or 420 with a grade of C or above

Show transcript -- unofficial is fine -- to the instructor.  Highlight or circle the course.

Took MATH 110, 112, 125, 300, 310, 341, 344, 315, or STAT 300.

Take the math assessment test.  It must be the Level 5 Pre-Calculus test.  This test is available on a drop-in basis during the hours listed on the Counseling Services website:

http://www.crc.losrios.edu/Student_Services/Assessment/Testing_Schedule.htm

Click on “Testing Schedule.”

Show the test results to the instructor.  Test results placing you into MATH 335, 350, 370, or 400 are accepted.  (A result of “eligible to take” MATH 120 does not meet the prerequisite. You would have to take the MATH 120 course before CHEM 400.)

Took Math at Another College (Outside Los Rios District)

Bring your transcript to a CRC academic counselor, who will certify that the course is equivalent to one of the accepted courses above.  (DO NOT bring this transcript to your chemistry instructor; she/he cannot and will not evaluate it.)  Give the instructor the validation form from the counselor.

Took Math in High School (Any Level)

PREREQUISITE TWO:  CHEMISTRY

Took Chemistry at CRC, ARC, SCC, or FLC/EDC

Took CHEM 300 with a grade of C or above

The instructor probably has your information already in the system, but you may wish to bring a transcript -- unofficial is fine -- just in case.

Took CHEM 305.

Take CHEM 300 before taking CHEM 400.  Alternatively, you may wish to speak to the instructor.  Some instructors make exceptions based on their chosen criteria.  If you are seeking such an exception, be sure to seek it in advance.  (Once classes start, instructors may not have time to plan a special arrangement, even if they would like to.)

Took Chemistry at Another College (Outside Los Rios District)

Bring your transcript to a CRC academic counselor, who will certify that the course is equivalent to CHEM 300.  (DO NOT bring this transcript to your chemistry instructor; she/he cannot and will not evaluate it.)  Give the instructor the validation form from the counselor.

Took Chemistry in High School

Took a full year of either Chemistry, Honors Chemistry, or AP Chemistry, with a C or above in both semesters

Show transcript -- unofficial is fine -- to the instructor.  Highlight or circle the course (both semesters, if it was in semesters).

Took less than a year, or earned below a C in any portion

-or-

Took a course with a complex name, such as Chemistry in the Community or Chemistry for Consumers

Take CHEM 300 before taking CHEM 400.

Took a Chemistry Placement Test at ARC, SCC, or FLC/EDC

Passed their placement test

Show the placement results to your CRC instructor.  The Chemistry Department accepts chemistry placement results from within the district.

Prerequisite Challenge

If you feel you have knowledge and/or experience equivalent to what you would learn in a prerequisite course, you must obtain a Prerequisite Challenge form from the Science, Math and Engineering Office, in the center of the Science (SCI) building.  Return the filled-out form as instructed along with supporting documentation, to help the Challenge Committee make the best decision in your case.  Note that this process may take a week, so you will need to start this before the semester begins, in order to meet the prerequisite deadline for the class time(s) you have chosen.
