CISP 300 Algorithm Design/Problem Solving Information

Welcome to Sue Palm's CISP 300 Web Page

You can contact me via e-mail using this address:  sue.palm@crc.losrios.edu

CISP 300 is a beginning programming design course.  This course is a prerequisite to many of the actual programming courses taught at CRC.  We will NOT be writing programs using a programming language; we will be writing programs using English-like statements called pseudocode.  Topics covered in the class include:

  • Understanding and solving logic problems
  • Understanding data and how they're stored and manipulated
  • Concepts of basic programming design including structures and structured programming
  • Making decisions and learning to repeat statements
  • Understanding and implementing modular design
  • Learning and using parameters and arguments
  • Basic understanding of objects, events and databases

In addition, we will be using a Course Management System for the course.  Currently, we're using Desire 2 Learn.  For the on-ground section, D2L will be used to take quizzes and exams and submit homework.  For the on-line sections, D2L will be used for all aspects of the course.

The prerequisite for this course is CISC 310, Introduction to Computer Science.  It is a corequisite, which means you can take the requisite at the same time as CISP 300.  If you choose to do so, I recommend that you do NOT register for a late starting section of CISC 310.  If you take the requisite too late, you will not have the skills necessary for CISP 300 and will be very frustrated.  In the on-line orientation documents, there is a process to challenge the prequisite and I recommend you look carefully at that process and complete it.

The textbook required is:

For Summer and Fall 2012:  "Programming Logic and Design Comprehensive" by Joyce Farrell (Sixth Edition)

I'm offering the following sections:

Summer 2012 Semester:
