The Cosumnes River College Library supports the instructional philosophy and programs of the College. We also support the learning needs of a diverse student population, the instructional needs of the faculty, and the information needs of the community. To provide these services, the Library gives access to recorded knowledge, information and data, and provides training and assistance in the use of recorded knowledge and information.
By activating your Student Access Card as a library card or applying for a library card, you agree to abide by the Library Borrowing policy and to be responsible for any library items that are borrowed on your card.

- Students: your Student Access Card is also your library card. For more information about how to get your Student Access Card and how it can further benefit you, click on the following link: Student Access Card
- Faculty and Staff: your Employee ID Card is also your library card
NOTE: Your cards are not automatically activated as library cards when you first get them. To activate your library card , you must go to the Library and present your Student Access Card or Employee ID Card to a staff member at the Library Circulation Desk.
Once you have activated your library card , you may borrow library items and have access to your library record and the Library's online research databases at home or from any computer with an Internet connection.
Your activated library card is valid at all of the Los Rios Community College libraries (i.e., American River, El Dorado Center, Folsom Lake, and Sacramento City).
You are responsible for updating your library record when you change your contact information (i.e. address, phone, etc.). You must present your library card every time you want to borrow a library item.
If you are not a CRC student, faculty, staff, or a student at any of our sister campuses in the Los Rios Community College District, you are welcome to apply for a Friends of the Cosumnes River College library card and have the privilege to borrow items from our library. Ask at the Library Circulation Desk for a Friends of the Cosumnes River College Library application form.
NOTE: Report your lost or stolen library card immediately to library staff. You are responsible for all library items checked out on your card and any fines and fees that those items may incur. Do not lend your library card to anyone.
You may check out (i.e. borrow) library materials at the Circulation Desk once you have found them in the library. The Circulation Desk is located next to the library entrance. You must present your library card every time you want to borrow a library item. Library staff at the Circulation Desk are available to assist you with checking out (i.e. borrowing), returning, and renewing or extending due dates of library books and other library items.
Borrowing limits indicate how many librray items you can check out (i.e. borrow) at a time. Look at the chart below to find out what your borrowing limits are:
|Circulating Books .............................||7|
|Circulating DVD/Video .....................||3|
|Reserve Materials ............................||2|
Loan periods indicate how long you can check out (i.e. borrow) a library item. Depending on the item, loan periods can range from two hours to three weeks. Look at the chart below to find out the loan periods of library items:
|Circulating Books ............................||1 week or 3 weeks|
|Circulating CD/DVD/Video ...............||1 week|
(newspapers, magazines, etc.)
|Use in Library Only|
|Reference Materials .........................||Use in Library Only|
|Reserve Books ................................||2 hours (Use in Library Only), 1 day, 3 days, or 1 week|
|Reserve DVD/Video .........................||2 hours (Use in Library Only)|
NOTE: If you do not know when your library item is due, check your library record online to find out: Log In to My Library Record
Reserve materials are located behind the Library Circulation Desk. Most of the items are class textbooks or required class readings that we receive from your professors. The items have a shorter loan period so that all students in the class may have greater access to them.
You may only borrow two (2) reserve items at a time. Many of the items, especially textbooks, have a 2-hour borrowing period and may only be used in the Library. Other reserve items may have varying loan periods, so make sure to check the due date when you borrow the item at the Library Circulation Desk.
Reserve items cannot be placed on hold; they are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Reserve items from another Los Rios campus cannot be requested to be sent to CRC for pick up; you may go to the Los Rios campus library where the reserve item is located and use it there.
You can search for reserve materials in the Library Catalog (http://lois.losrios.edu) by your professor's last name (e.g. SMITH) or by course title (e.g. ENGWR 300). Once you find the reserve item you want, write down the call number of the item you are requesting (e.g. E184.C5 B432 2003) and give it to the staff behind the Library Circulation Desk.
Remember to return your reserve items before they are due to avoid overdue fines. Bring your reserve items to the Library Circulation Desk and request library staff to "check in" the items to make sure that the items have been returned to the Library properly and on time.
Overdue Fines for Reserve Materials:
|2-hour Reserve ......||$1.00 per hour - maximum of $50.00 per item or replacement cost (whichever is greater)|
|1-day Reserve .......||$1.00 per day - maximum of $50.00 per item or replacement cost (whichever is greater)|
|3-day Reserve .......||$1.00 per day - maximum of $50.00 per item or replacement cost (whichever is greater)|
|1-week Reserve .....||$1.00 per day - maximum of $50.00 per item or replacement cost (whichever is greater)|
CRC Library currently subscribes to many print periodicals (e.g. magazines, journals, newspapers). Current issues of these print periodicals are available on our magazine display and newspaper rack for browsing and reading.
Older issues of the displayed periodicals are stored behind the hinged shelves underneath the display (just pull up the hinged shelves to see the older issues) and on the bound periodicals shelves.
Older issues of newspapers are behind the Circulation Desk (just ask library staff at the Circulation Desk for the date of the issue you want.
The library also has a collection of microfilm/microfiche periodicals as well as older print subscriptions that are no longer in the magazine display area. Search in the Library Catalog for periodical titles that are no longer displayed.
In addition to the physical periodical collection, access to online periodicals and articles is available through the Library’s online research databases. Search our online database, A to Z Periodical Title List, to find out which online periodicals provide the full text of their articles in our various online research databases.
NOTE: In the library online research databses, full text availability of articles is determined by a legal contract between the periodical publisher and the database provider. Speak with a reference librarian for more options to find a full text article if it cannot be found via the library online research databases.
All items must be returned before the due date of the loan period to avoid paying overdue fines. Items may be returned to one of the four library book return drop chutes on the CRC campus:
- Inside the Library, the book drop is located on the side of the Library Circulation Desk.
- Outside the Library, the book drop is to the right of the entrance doors of the Library.
- Outside the Library building:
- one book drop is located on the South side of the Library building (fountain side).
- the other book drop is on the North side of the Library building (P.E. building side).
You may also bring your library items to the Library Circulation Desk and request library staff to "check in" the items if you want to make sure that the items have been returned to the Library properly.
NOTE: You are responsible for any overdue fines, cost of damage, or loss of borrowed materials.
You may renew items that are checked out to you from our Circulating collection, as long as no other person has placed a hold on the item (i.e. requested to be on the waiting list for it).
To renew your item, you must BRING IT to the Library Circulation Desk (library staff cannot renew your item if it is not physically there) OR log in to your library record and renew your item online yourself.
NOTE: No telephone renewals. Students can renew library items only ONE time per item.
If you want a library item that is already checked out by another person, you may place a hold (i.e. request to be on the waiting list) on it through the Library Catalog at http://lois.losrios.edu. Look up the item in the Library Catalog and open the full record for the item, then click on the Request button to place a hold on it.
Note: Because Reserve Materials are in high demand, you CANNOT place a hold on Reserve Materials. For the same reason, you also may not place a hold on 1-week Circulating items.
If the Library receives the items you borrowed after the date they are due, then overdue fines will be assessed. Overdue fines will continue to accumulate up to the date you return the library item. Return all of your library items before they are due to avoid paying overdue fines. Look at the charts below to find out how much an item will cost in overdue fines if the Library receives it late:
|3 week Circulating item ...................||$0.50 per day (maximum of $20.00 per item)|
|1 week Circulating item ...................||$1.00 per day (maximum of $20.00 per item)|
|1 week Circulating DVD/Video ..........||$1.00 per day (maximum of $25.00 per item)|
|2-hour Reserve||$1.00 per hour, maximum of $50.00 per item or replacement cost (whichever is higher)|
|1-day Reserve||$1.00 per day, maximum of $50.00 per item or replacement cost (whichever is higher)|
|3-day Reserve||$1.00 per day, maximum of $50.00 per item or replacement cost (whichever is higher)|
|1-week Reserve||$1.00 per day, maximum of $50.00 per item or replacement cost (whichever is higher)|
NOTE: Non-payment of fines or failure to return checked out material will result in a BLOCK on your record in the Admissions Office.
Payment of Fines:
Library fines may be paid at any of the four Los Rios college libraries. To pay fines at CRC students should first visit the library and ask for a statement of fines due at the library's Circulation Desk. This statement must then be taken to the Admissions/Business Office where payment is made. Receipt of payment should then be presented at the Library's Circulation Desk for library system clearance.
You are responsible for any items that are borrowed on your card. If you lose a library item, you will be charged a $10.00 NON-REFUNDABLE processing fee plus the cost of a replacement copy of the item.
The minimum amount you will be charged will not be less than the maximum overdue fine amount for that item.
If you find the lost item within 30 days of payment, you may bring the item and the original receipt of payment to the Library Circulation Desk to receive a refund of the replacement cost.
If you want a library item that CRC Library does not have, you may request an interlibrary loan, free of charge, either from our sister libraries within the Los Rios Community College District (LRCCD) or from libraries outside of LRCCD. You must have a current, activated library card before you may use these services.
Requesting items from other LRCCD Libraries:
You may request library items to be sent to CRC Library for you to pick up from any of the LRCCD Libraries (American River, El Dorado Center, Folsom Lake, Sacramento City). Search for your item in the Library Catalog (http://lois.losrios.edu). If it is available in one of our sister libraries and is not restricted to in-library use only, then use the Request feature to have it sent to CRC for you to pick up. Items sent from our sister libraries generally arrive within 2-3 business days of placing the request for you to pick up.
NOTE: Reserve items from another Los Rios campus cannot be requested to be sent to CRC for pick up; you may go to the Los Rios campus library where the Reserve item is located and use it there.
Requesting items from libraries outside of LRCCD:
You may also request library items from a network of libraries outside of LRCCD. In most cases there is no charge for requesting items outside of LRCCD. Forms are available at the Circulation Desk, the Reference Desk, and online for requesting items outside of the district. Request forms must be filled out completely and should be submitted in person at the Circulation Desk.
NOTE: You are responsible for any overdue fines, cost of damage, or loss of borrowed materials.
