Basic Textbook Information

Students can find out which textbook their professor is using by going to the class schedule and clicking the textbook link for the appropriate course. The following list illustrates the common advantages and disadvantages of each purchase option.

- Advantages
- familiarity
- ability to highlight and take notes within the textbook
- durability
- traditional hardcover textbooks can often (and easily) be resold
- easy to carry around
- used copies can be found on services such as AllBookStores.com or amazon.com
- if the course requires online homework, the Hawks Nest College Store usually carries
*new*textbooks bundled with the access codes to the online homework system, thus making the total cost lower than if purchased separately

- Disadvantages
- of all the purchasing options, the traditional hardcover can be the most expensive - at least initially. This is especially true if the course requires a newer edition of the textbook. Of course, if the plan is to resell the textbook, then that actually decreases the total cost of the text, but future prices are never guaranteed.
- if the student is purchasing a used version of the textbook, and if their course is using online homework, then they usually must purchase access to the online homework in addition to the purchase of the hardcover textbook.

- Advantages
- significantly cheaper than the traditional hardcover textbook
- ability to highlight and take notes within the textbook
- portability (students often carry only one chapter at a time)
- if the course requires online homework, the Hawks Nest College Store usually carries
*new*loose-leaf textbooks bundled with the access codes to the online homework system to make the total cost lower than if purchased separately

- Disadvantages
- low (to non-existent) resale value
- pages can get lost easily if the student is disorganized

- Advantages
- if using an online homework system, the e-book is the cheapest of the three versions of the textbook (even if the student is not using an online homework system, we have "general enrollment" courses so the student may access the e-book through the online homework system as long as they have an access code)
- ability to highlight and take notes within the e-book
- its portability (students carry nothing more than a smart phone or tablet)
- access to additional content via the e-book such as tutorials, videos, extra problem sets, and/or extra demonstrations

- Disadvantages
- there is no resale value
- if the student is enrolled in a course that does not use an online homework system, then they must access the e-book via a special "general enrollment" course (this is actually not a disadvantage... it's just an initial, very small hassle)
- many students prefer the "feel" of a physical textbook over an e-book

Math 400 - 402 (Calculus I through III) Textbooks

There is only one textbook used for Math 400 through 402 at Cosumnes River College. While there may exist other options for purchasing the textbook for your course, the options listed below are meant to give you the most flexibility while saving you money.

**Edition:** 7th (2010), **Publisher:** Cengage

*There are several purchase options for this textbook. Please read the following carefully.*

- You must get Calculus:
*Early Transcendentals*7th edition. - International versions of this textbook are fine; however, they must be the Early Transcendentals version.
- If you plan on taking this series only through Calculus II, then you may purchase the Single Variable Calculus: Early Transcendentals version instead of the entire textbook.
- Since we have special pricing on the loose-leaf version, we recommend that you just purchase the loose-leaf textbook through the bookstore to avoid any confusion.
- While your Calculus I instructor might not use WebAssign, your Calculus II instructor might. We recommend playing it safe and just purchasing access to WebAssign from the start of the series. With access to WebAssign, you get the e-book, access to all the tutorial exercises, access to embedded videos and tutorials within the e-book, and access to all the Wolfram Demonstrations used throughout the course. The Mathematics Department has "general enrollment" calculus courses on WebAssign that you can log into so you can access your textbook at any time - even if your instructor is not using WebAssign.

Success in your calculus course starts here! James Stewart's CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS texts are world-wide best-sellers for a reason: they are clear, accurate, and filled with relevant, real-world examples. With CALCULUS: EARLY TRANSCENDENTALS, Seventh Edition, Stewart conveys not only the utility of calculus to help you develop technical competence, but also gives you an appreciation for the intrinsic beauty of the subject. His patient examples and built-in learning aids will help you build your mathematical confidence and achieve your goals in the course.

Not recommended as it is the most expensive option (upwards of $300)

ISBN 13: 9780538497909

- AllBookStores.com (used, new, and rentals)

**SPECIAL NOTE:** Depending on the instructor, you may be required to purchase access to WebAssign (either now or in a future semester). This would cost you an additional $110 (via WebAssign).

ISBN 13: 9781305007444

- Hawk's Nest College Store (used: $109.40, new: $145.85)

**SPECIAL NOTE:** If you are purchasing a used loose-leaf textbook, make sure that the access code is unused. Otherwise, you may have to purchase access to WebAssign.

- WebAssign ($110 for the lifetime of the edition)

**SPECIAL NOTE:** If you are going to purchase the e-book through the WebAssign website, your instructor will give you instructions on how to do so during the first class meeting.

- CengageBrain.com ($9.99 per chapter)

**SPECIAL NOTE:** This is the most unique option and *can* save you a lot of money *if *you are not using online homework. Some instructors only cover chapters 2 through 5 in Calculus I (some cover 1 through 5). This means you could get through Calculus I for as little as $40. Moreover, Calculus II covers chapers 6, 7, 8, 10, and 11. That's only $50. It still would be cheaper to get the loose-leaf if your are going through the entire series or if you run into an instructor who requires WebAssign.
