Meta-Major Construction Interests & Values

Meta-Major Construction Interests & Values

Clarifying the Path

What are Meta-Majors?

  • Meta-majors are collections of academic majors that have related courses and outcomes.
  • They also include groups of degrees & certificates that are considered similar from a student’s perspective. In most cases, students will still declare a major in a specific discipline or department.
  • With meta-majors, there is no guesswork for the students concerning which courses will be applicable to their major.
  • Meta-majors can guide the students on a path to completion and to help them make the connection between their studies and different career opportunities.

Meta-Major Construction Interests and Values*

  • Maximizing efficiency for students whose choices of their major/career are clear
  • Maximizing efficiency for students who aren’t sure of their major/career or who change their minds
    • Competency-based organization that allows students mobility within a meta-major
    • Initial Path overlap (convergence) among programs in a meta-major that allows
      • Exploration at the start of programs
      • Supports student mobility within a meta-major later in the programs
  • Maximizing opportunity for exploration for students who are undecided about their majors and careers
  • Alignment of meta-majors with career choices/opportunities
  • Stimulating and supporting cooperation among programs
  • Stimulating and supporting an effective administrative structure that
    • Can serve as the basis of instructional divisions
    • Avoids creating uneven resource allocations or “resource hogs”
  • Stimulating and supporting an effective “distributed” student support services structure
  • Intuitive program groupings
    • Clear to students
    • Clear to industry, career, and transfer partners
    • Clear to faculty who counsel and/or advise our students

Note: Some of these interests and values are in potential conflict with others.

*These values were affirmed by the Pathways Steering Committee leadership and the faculty leads of each of the four Pathways Workgroups (10/17/2017) and by the Clarifying the Path Workgroup (11/2/2017).

* The college’s Career and Academic Communities (CACs) were initially approved 5/11/2018 based on a recommendation by the Clarifying the Path Workgroup (Clarifying). A conversational draft of these CACs was first presented to the Academic Senate 11/17/17. A revision of the recommendation was presented to the Academic Senate 3/23/18 as a first read. The revisions reflected feedback from the Senate on the occasion of the first read as well as broader feedback solicited by Clarifying in response to Senate’s feedback; in specific, feedback solicited via the program to CAC alignment surveys administered to the faculty, classified professionals, administrators, and students (4/16-5/2/18), feedback solicited during the Guided Pathways meeting with Department Chairs (5/1/18), and feedback provided directly to Clarifying leadership (3/23-5/18) by Department Chairs and program representatives. 9/19/18 Clarifying recommended a revision to English and Language Studies (previously English, Humanities, and Language Studies), which was approved by the Academic Senate 9/28/18.
