CRC Activities:

On behalf of the organizing committee for the 7th annual Native American Heritage Week celebration at Cosumnes River College, we want to thank everyone for their support and attendance at the events on campus last week.

The week began with a blessing and award recognition to Mary Tarango, a Miwok Tribal Elder. The week activities included academic presentations on Tribal Leadership and Native Traditions by Crystal Martinez-Alire (CRC counselor and Tribal Chairwoman), Historical Trauma and Native Families by Dr. Billie Jo Kipp (President of the California Tribal College), and Native Healing Traditions by Sage La Pena (Clinical herbalist and Ethno-botanist). The week also included native cultural demonstrations that provided education and student engagement: Al Striplen (counselor, educator, and interpreter of Native American cultures for the State Indian Museum), Tongva singers from Los Angeles, Hoop Dancers from Kansas, two Powwow groups, Mauri from New Zealand, the Polynesian Ohana singers, and Bird Singers from East Los Angeles. We ended the week with a Native Night Concert featuring tall Paul (hip hop artist), Mic Jorden (hip hop artist), Sampson Brothers, and Scatter Their Own (rock n' roll). Its an honor and blessing to have all of these presenters on our campus providing education awareness of the native and indigenous culture to our students, and campus community.

We want to thank our sponsors: The Office of the CRC President/Equity Funds, CRC Cultural Competence and Equity Committee, Fifth Direction, Wilton Rancheria, LRCFT faculty union and California Endowment.

We thank all of the Native American Planning Committee members; Jason Newman, Crystal Martinez, Aselia Melo, April Robinson, Emily Barkley,  Michael Chappell, Chris Torres, Paolo Soriano, Winnie Lanier and student Tanya Reyes and November Rain committee designated student photographer.and the numerous campus support staff, students and student ambassadors for their tireless efforts in making the event a success for students:

We look forward to next year’s event!
